Gas Dryer Installation Requirements Explained

Gas dryer installation requirements cover the gas line, shutoff valve, LP conversion and placement. See what Whirlpool gas dryer guides specify and why.

A gas dryer needs the same venting as an electric one and a plain 120-volt outlet, plus a gas supply. Gas dryer installation requirements cover that supply, the shutoff valve, the fuel type and where the dryer may sit, and they're detailed because the dryer burns fuel inside your home.

What the spec actually says

Why manufacturers require it

  • •Supply size: The burner needs a steady volume of gas. Undersized tubing on a long run can starve it, which is why the small-tubing allowance stops at 20 feet.
  • •A nearby shutoff: A manual valve within 6 feet lets anyone stop the gas quickly before moving or servicing the dryer.
  • •Fuel type: Natural gas and LP burn at different pressures through different orifices. A dryer set for one won't burn correctly on the other until it's converted.
  • •New connectors: Calling for a new approved line avoids reusing a connector that's been bent, kinked or corroded.
  • •Garage height: Raising the burner 18 inches keeps its ignition source above the floor, where heavier-than-air fuel vapors from cars or stored fuel tend to collect.

How to check your home against it

Visual checks only. Don't loosen any gas fitting.

  1. Check the rating plate on the dryer for the gas type it's set up for. Piped utility gas is natural gas; a propane tank outside the house means LP.
  2. Find the gas shutoff valve for the dryer and measure its distance. It should be within 6 feet and easy to reach.
  3. Look at the connector between the valve and the dryer. It should be an approved appliance connector, not kinked or crushed behind the machine.
  4. Confirm the dryer plugs into a grounded three-prong 120-volt outlet with no adapter.
  5. In a garage, measure the height of the dryer's base above the floor.
  6. Make sure no water heater or furnace shares a small closet with the dryer.

What happens when it's ignored

  • •An undersized supply or wrong fuel type produces a weak, lazy or sooty flame and long drying times.
  • •A distant or blocked shutoff valve leaves no quick way to stop the gas.
  • •A kinked or reused connector can leak.
  • •Poor combustion can raise carbon monoxide risk. National Grid treats symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, such as headache and nausea, as a gas emergency.

Gas dryers have the same vent length limits as electric models. See dryer vent maximum length.

When it needs a licensed pro

  • •Connecting, disconnecting or moving a gas dryer, and adding or replacing a shutoff valve, are jobs for a licensed gas fitter or plumber, as your town requires.
  • •LP conversion must be done by a qualified technician, and the 13-inch pressure check needs proper gauges.
  • •If you smell gas, National Grid says to go outside and call 1-800-490-0045 or 911 immediately, and not to touch light switches, phones or anything that could cause a spark, including pulling plugs.

Quick check: Find the dryer's gas shutoff now, before you ever need it. It should be within 6 feet and reachable without moving the dryer.

When the hookup is right and the gas dryer still tumbles cold, the igniter, valve coils or a safety switch are the usual suspects, and all of them belong to a technician. Book through our dryer repair page or call TrueFix Long Island at (631) 985-3690.
