Washer and dryer stacking kit requirements are the conditions a manufacturer sets before a dryer can be mounted on top of a washer: which models the kit fits, what the pair must sit on and how much height it needs. They come from the stack kit's own instructions, because the kit is the only thing holding a heavy, tumbling dryer in place above a spinning washer.
What the spec actually says
- •Whirlpool stack kit W10882520: The instructions say the kit is for use only with front-load washers and dryers, and that the stacked washer and dryer must be installed directly on the floor, not elevated on a pedestal. They say to keep the washer's feet even, check level on each side and the front, and note that the stacking shelf supports a maximum of 26 pounds. A location diagram gives the installation heights to plan around. If outlets, faucets or the power cord need changes, it says a qualified plumber or electrician should make them.
- •Whirlpool stack kit W10678970A: This kit is for use only with Whirlpool front load washers and Hybrid Heat Pump dryers. The dryer sits on the washer with a slight overhang at the back, and the instructions warn that too much overhang lets the rear pads slip off. Mobile homes need a separate installation kit, and the shipping bolts of both machines come out as their own manuals describe.
Both kits follow the same pattern: each is matched to specific front-load washer and dryer families, and neither is described as fitting other pairs. Don't assume another brand's kit, or another family's, will work.
Why manufacturers require it
- •Front-loaders only: A top-load washer opens from the top, so nothing can sit on it. Front-loaders have a flat, closed top that can carry the dryer.
- •Matched footprints: The kit's brackets line up with mounting points on particular cabinets. A dryer from a different family may not have them.
- •No pedestals: Raising a stack on a pedestal adds height and leverage, so vibration at the top is magnified.
- •Level and even feet: The washer is now the foundation for both machines. A rocking washer rocks the dryer too.
- •Height: The closet must fit the stack plus room for hoses, the vent connection and service.
How to check your home against it
- Write down both model numbers and find the stack kit part number listed in each manual. They should name the same kit.
- Confirm both machines are front-loaders and the same width.
- Measure the ceiling or closet height and compare it with the height figures in the kit's location diagram, leaving room above the dryer for service.
- Look at where the dryer's outlet and vent connection will sit. A stacked dryer's cord and vent are much higher than usual.
- If either machine is on a pedestal, plan to remove it.
- Level the washer first, with all four feet down and lock nuts tight, before the dryer goes on.
What happens when it's ignored
- •An unmatched kit leaves the dryer loosely held, and it can shift during the washer's spin.
- •A stack on pedestals shakes more and is harder to keep level.
- •The dryer's vent may be crushed or kinked against the wall to make the stack fit.
- •Service access is harder in a closet that's barely tall enough.
Closets add their own airflow rules. See laundry closet requirements.
When it needs a licensed pro
- •A stacked dryer often needs its outlet moved higher. That's work for a licensed electrician, as the Whirlpool kit guide notes.
- •Water valves or drain changes for a new layout need a plumber.
- •A gas dryer in a stack needs its gas connection made by a licensed gas fitter or plumber.

Quick check: Look up the stack kit part number in both manuals. If they don't name the same kit, the pair isn't meant to stack.
