A dryer that tumbles for an hour and hands back damp, cool laundry has one of four faults: a blocked vent, a blown thermal fuse, a failed heat source, or a failed thermostat. On Long Island the order of likelihood is not the order most people guess — the vent comes first by a wide margin, and it is also the fault that keeps coming back if nobody addresses it.
Why vents fail here specifically
Basement laundry is standard in this housing stock. That puts the dryer below grade, which means the exhaust has to travel a long horizontal run, often with two or three elbows, before it reaches a wall cap at ground level. Every elbow costs you the equivalent of several extra feet of duct. Add flexible foil hose behind the machine, a bird's nest in the wall cap in spring, and fifteen years of lint, and airflow drops far enough that the machine cooks itself.
That is the part worth understanding: a blocked vent does not merely slow drying, it destroys parts. Heat cannot leave, the high-limit thermostat trips repeatedly, and eventually the thermal fuse — a one-time safety device — opens permanently. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and you will be replacing it again, plus, sooner or later, the element.
Sorting the four causes
- •Blocked vent — clothes are hot and damp, the outside of the cabinet is very warm, the cycle takes two or three times as long, and the wall cap flap barely moves when the dryer runs.
- •Thermal fuse — the dryer tumbles perfectly and produces no heat at all. Absolutely no warmth, not reduced warmth.
- •Heating element (electric) or igniter/valve coils (gas) — same total absence of heat; distinguishing between this and the fuse takes a meter. On gas machines you may hear the igniter glow and then the burner fail to stay lit, which points at the coils or the flame sensor.
- •Cycling thermostat — heat comes on, then quits early, and the machine runs cold for the rest of the cycle.
The five-minute test you can do
Run the dryer on a timed cycle for ten minutes, then go outside and put your hand at the wall cap. You should feel a strong, warm push of air — enough to move the flap clearly. Weak or cool flow with a hot cabinet is a vent problem, full stop. While you are there, look for lint packed around the flap and check that the flap has not been painted shut, which we find more often than you would think.
What good vent work looks like
- •Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, never plastic or foil concertina.
- •The shortest practical route with the fewest elbows.
- •Foil tape at the joints, not screws — screws project into the duct and catch lint.
- •A wall cap with a working flap and no screen.
- •A full brush-out of the whole run, from machine to cap, not just the first three feet.
We clear the run as part of the repair rather than treating it as an upsell, because otherwise our own fix does not hold.
Cost and the replace-or-repair line
Thermal fuses, thermostats and elements are inexpensive parts; most electric no-heat repairs land between $160 and $290 with labor, gas burner work usually $190 to $340. Against a new dryer at eight hundred dollars and up, plus delivery and removal, repair wins comfortably on any machine that is not already at the end of its drum-bearing life. If the drum is roaring, the bearing is gone and the cabinet is fifteen years old, we will say so.
One safety note
Lint plus trapped heat is how dryer fires start. If your machine is running long cycles and the cabinet is hot to the touch, treat it as urgent rather than annoying, and stop running it overnight or while the house is empty until the vent has been checked.
