Bosch dishwashers are among the best-built machines in an average Long Island kitchen, and they generate a specific, predictable set of service calls. Three of them account for most of what we see.
E24: a drain restriction, not a dead pump
E24 means the machine did not empty in the expected time. Work the path in order before assuming the worst:
- Twist out the filter assembly in the base and rinse the cylinder and the flat screen.
- Check the drain hose behind the unit for a kink — very common after a cabinet has been pushed back.
- If the hose runs to a sink air gap or a disposer inlet, check both. A disposer that has never had its dishwasher inlet plug knocked out is a classic, and so is a blocked air gap on the counter.
- Only then suspect the drain pump.
The filter and the air gap between them explain the large majority of E24 calls we attend.
E15: the leak sensor did its job
E15 means water has reached the base tray and the AquaStop system has shut the machine down to protect your floor. It is not a fault code to reset and forget — something is leaking, and the sensor is the only reason you are not dealing with a wrecked cabinet.
Usual sources: the door seal, a spray-arm bearing, a hose clamp inside the cabinet, or the heat exchanger. Finding it means pulling the unit out and drying the base, which is the job. Anyone who "clears E15" without locating a leak has left you with the same leak and no alarm.
Damp plastics are not a fault
Bosch, Miele and most European machines dry by condensation rather than with a heating element: the load is rinsed hot and the moisture condenses on the cooler stainless tub wall. Glass and china come out dry; plastics, which hold almost no heat, come out damp. That is designed behaviour, not a failure.
Two things genuinely improve it: keep the rinse-aid reservoir topped up, and crack the door open at the end of the cycle. If a machine that used to dry well suddenly does not, then look at the rinse aid, the water temperature and the sensor — in that order.
The hard-water tax
The moderately hard water most of Long Island receives, roughly 100 to 180 ppm, quietly narrows spray jets and scales the heat exchanger. On Bosch models with a built-in water softener, keep the salt reservoir filled — it exists exactly for this and running it dry costs you cleaning performance you have already paid for. On models without one, use tablets designed for hard water and descale the interior a few times a year.
Faults that need us
- •Circulation pump weak or noisy: poor coverage on the top rack.
- •Drain pump failed after the path checks out clean.
- •Door seal hardened, leaking at the bottom corners.
- •Control module faults, most often after a nearby power event.
Bosch parts are well supported and reasonably priced; the common repairs run $200 to $360 with parts and labor. Where a machine is fifteen years old and needs both a circulation pump and a heat exchanger, we will say plainly that replacement is the better use of the money.
Integrated units and cabinet damage
Most Bosch installs here are integrated behind a custom panel, which hides seepage until the floor tells you about it. If you have seen water at the toe kick or the flooring in front feels soft, say so when you book. We pull the machine and check the substrate rather than diagnosing from the doorway.
