Nobody enjoys asking what a repair will cost and hearing "it depends." It does depend — but the structure behind the number is simple enough to explain in advance, and knowing it makes it obvious when a quote is out of line.
How a service call is built
Diagnostic fee: $65 – $85. That pays for a technician's time to find the actual fault. We credit it against the repair when you go ahead, so if you approve the work it effectively disappears. If you decide not to repair, that fee is all you owe.
Then one fixed figure. Parts and labor together, quoted before anything is opened, and it does not change afterwards. If a technician gets into the machine and finds a second failed part, that is a new conversation with you, not a bigger invoice at the end.
What the bands actually look like

Those are Long Island numbers with parts and labor included, not a labor rate you multiply later. High-end and built-in equipment — Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Thermador, Viking — sits above these bands because the parts cost more and the access takes longer, and we say so before we come out.
The repair-or-replace maths
The rule we actually use, in this order:
- Age against expected life. Refrigerators and ranges run 12 to 15 years, dishwashers and washers 10 to 13, dryers often longer. Under half its expected life, repair almost always wins.
- The 50 percent line. If the repair costs more than half of a comparable new unit, replacement usually makes more sense.
- What kind of fault it is. A sealed-system failure or a cracked tub on an older machine is a replace. Pumps, fans, elements, boards and seals are repairs.
- What it is built into. A panel-ready column refrigerator or an integrated dishwasher carries cabinetry and installation costs a freestanding unit does not, which pushes the sensible repair ceiling much higher.
Point four is where a lot of online advice falls apart on Long Island, because so much of the kitchen stock here is built-in.
Five questions worth asking anyone
- •Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?
- •Will I get one fixed price covering parts and labor before work starts?
- •Are you using OEM parts, and what is the warranty on the part and on the labor?
- •Will the technician who diagnoses it be the one who fixes it?
- •If it is not worth repairing, will you tell me that?
Our answers, for the record: yes; yes; OEM with 90 days on parts and 30 on labor; yes, it is a four-person shop; and yes — we would rather charge a diagnostic and keep the customer than sell a repair that does not deserve to happen.
What makes appliances fail faster here
Two local conditions do real damage. Moderately hard water leaves scale on every heating element and narrows dishwasher jets and ice-maker lines. Coastal humidity, especially within a few miles of either shore, corrodes contacts, terminal blocks and control-board solder joints. Neither is dramatic; both shorten service life, and both are worth knowing when you decide how much to invest in a ten-year-old machine.
Getting the most out of the visit
Have the model and serial number ready, describe what the machine does rather than what you think is broken, and mention any error code exactly as displayed. That is often the difference between a part on the van and a second visit later in the week.
